Breeders Associations

Many reputable and ethical breeders belong to an association, who are responsible for enforcing rules and a code of ethics.

We recommend you check the association details on a breeder of choice. This will help verify they are legitimate.

State Regulations

Firstly, ask for their breeder identification number. Requirements for dog breeders vary from state to state, but it is a good idea to call their local council to ask whether breeders have to be registered with them and if there is a code of practice or guidelines they should be following. If the answer is yes, you can ask the breeder for their registration details and what guidelines they follow.
